There has been considerable interest and excitement around the country as the Olympic
Torch has passed cities, towns and villages from top to bottom of the United Kingdom,
on its 8,000 mile journey to the opening of the Olympic Games in London in July 2012.
The aim of the organisers of the relay was to have the torch pass within ten miles
of something like ninety percent of the population. For the residents of Ainsdale,
the distance varied from a few yards to a mile or so, and thousands took the opportunity
to line the route.
Carried by a team of relay runners, the torch was carried along Liverpool Road from
its junction with Welwyn Road, through the centre of the village, and along to the
junction with the Coastal Road.
